Stone's magic bullet still flying
"WUNNERFUL, WUNNERFUL," that was Lawrence Welk's impact on millions, said Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson of St. Monica's Church at services yesterday. At the chapel in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, six members of the Welk band played his favorite music -- Dixieland songs. Kathy Lennon and the Lennon Sisters, Raina English and Guy Hovis sang. Welk's oldest daughter, Shirley Fredericks, delivered the warm and humorous eulogy and Jack Minor also spoke. At the final, graveside farewell, all broke into the song that always closed the Welk show, "Adios, au Revoir, auf Weidersehn." Lawrence would have loved it ... Sad to report that Anne Jeffreys' sister, actress/artist Katherine Carmichael Baker, died yesterday at St.Joseph's after battling pancreatic cancer ... Lest anyone worry, Johnny Carson is not retiring. He and his nephew Jeff Sotzing, producer of "The Tonight Show," will be moving into Carson Productions Inc. offices in Malibu -- closer to Johnny's Pt. Dume home -- when he returns from a European vacation (Wimbledon included). Tomorrow's final in-person "guests" will only involve Ed, Doc and Tommy (Newsom). After the taping (6:30), they and cast/company members segue to Carson's home for the private, no celebs, farewell party ... Jack Carter's car was totaled, he was bruised, shaken up in an accident when Carter was en route to the Peter Nicholas Meyer wedding in Santa Monica. Jack was treated at Cedars-Sinai. He's skedded to raise a baton as comedy guest conductor at the May 27 Youth Philharmonic concert at the Scottish Rite Auditorium.
NEWLYWEDS NELL CARTER and record-producer Roger Larocque are off to a Bali honeymoon following last Thursday's wedding in Las Vegas, where Al Kasha gave away the bride. Al and Ceil K. intro'd the happy couple last year ... Law students Grace Ryang and Roy Price (son of Katherine and Frank Price) will wed Sunday at the BevHills Presbyterian Church. The couple met when students at--the Buckley School Agent Frank Cooper celebrates his 80th birthday today. It's also his 63rd year in showbiz. And on the 30th, he and wife Sylvia toast their 55th wedding anni ... "E.T." producer Jim Van Messel sang "Happy Birthday" -- in full Marilyn Monroe drag! ... Alan Ladd Jr. and Jay Kanter report the Secaucus, N.J., initial preview of "Diggstown" got 98% in the top two audience reaction boxes. This is the Michael Ritchie movie in which Lou Gossett Jr. told us he fights 10 men in 24 hours. (And has the bruises to prove it.) The MGM'ers are also smiling following the board meet in Paris, the "Mice and Men" screening at Cannes where they also laughingly launched Blake Edwards' "Son of the Pink Panther."
