Reel-life Woody-Mia marriage looks familiar
WE ARE FLYING by the seat of our pants. Simon has moved his play 50% outside in the adaptation for the screen. One of those "outside" scenes is a Cincy cemetery with tombstones dating pre-Civil War. The Col movie, produced by Ray Stark, stars Richard Dreyfuss and Mercedes Ruehl, Irene Worth and intros Brad Stoll and Mike Damus. And the movie's being brought in "for a price." That's somewhat over $ 15 million. ... Jimmy Caan joins Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan in "Flesh & Bone," directed by Steve Klovis for Mark Rosenberg and Paula Weinstein. ... With the offbeat baseball pic "A League of Their Own" hitting a home run, Dawn Steel's warming up "Mr. Kaufman" by Avery Corman and Diana Sokolow. It too is screwball, or rather knuckle ball. "Kaufman's" a 45-year-old high school principal whom the majors discover has a great knuckle ball And then of course, there's the upcoming Tom Selleck-starrer, "Mr.Baseball," with the ex-major leaguer making his comeback via Japan. ... And with the success of the western genre represented (and how!) by Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven," Fess Parker tells me he now plans to put his "After Sundown" in production. "I'd like to make one more picture," says Parker. And this would be it. He first acquired the true story set in Douglas, Ariz., back in 1966 and has written the screenplay himself. "The whites aren't better than the Indians in this story," says Fess. "And there are no six-guns shooting, but" he says it's a warm story worth telling.
IT'S BEEN A CLIFFHANGER, but "Cliffhanger's" in the home stretch and due to wind this week in Italy. Sylvester Stallone tossed an early wraparty for 200 cast/crew members last Saturday at the Cavalieri Hilton, having private birthday-partied g.f. Jennifer Flavin on Friday. ... Dino Conte and Disney toppers birthday-partied "Born Yesterday's" director Luis Mandoki on his 37th. This movie's also about to wrap following its D.C. locations. ... Barbra Streisand, vacationing in the Hamptons at Donna Karan's home, is also house-hunting back there. ... The Princess Grace Foundation-USA's second-anni gala will be held Nov. 12, Grace's birthday, at Lincoln Center's N.Y. State Theater. Prince Rainier, Prince Albert and Princess Caroline will be honored guests at a "Celebration of Young American Artists," presented by the N.Y. City Opera and the Foundation. Joe Cates is producing the awards ceremony for aspiring artists. ... Paula and Rod Steiger are off to London for the British Film Institute's National Film Theater retro of 17 pix by Rod, Aug. 23. ... Nikki Haskell and Jack Haley Jr.'s baby shower for Beverly Hills 213 columnist Deborah Chenoweth brought out more than 200 of her well-wishing pals at Haley's hilltop home. At the party, Corinna Fields reminded Haley she met husband Freddie at one of Haley's parties. There was plenty of meeting and mixing of singles at this one as well.
