'90210' thesp celebrates clandestine vows

GOOD MORNING: Newlyweds Shannen Doherty and Ashley Hamilton will celebrate last Friday's marriage here and his 19th birthday this Thursday in N.Y., where she's rehearsing this Saturday's "Saturday Night Live." Their not-so hush-hush wedding was covered by the usual helicoptered tabloids but was a surprise to her "Beverly Hills, 90210" troupe, including boss Aaron Spelling, who called her on the set yesterday to congratulate. Howcum he and the rest of the company weren't invited? Doherty told him, "We wanted to keep it very, very private."... The wedding was so "private," Ashley didn't even tell his father, George Hamilton, but Hamilton pere yesterday laughed, "I never told my parents when I got married!" George just got back from Munich filming "Paradise at the End of the Mountain" with Morgan Fairchild. And he's now readying a series, "The Public Eye ," to co-star Joan Collins. They'll play Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor-like thesps with an added spy angle. It would be all-Europe locationed with Christine Peters and George producing with Lisa Prods. The busy Hamilton, senior (junior's pretty busy, too), says he's also bought the rights to his hit "Love at First Bite" and is definitely going ahead (again) with "Love at Second Bite." He was encouraged to take another bite again because of Robert De Niro's and Tom Cruise's entry into macabre movies ... John Avildsen, who was to direct "Richie Rich" at WB if Macaulay Culkin was the star, told me he's sorry Mac left the pic. "He would have been a 'Prince and the Pauper' type -- he would have played two parts -- which would have amortized the cost!" Avildsen's currently editing his "Eight Seconds to Go" for New Line.

AVAST ME HEARTIES, there's still a lot of piracy afloat. Columbia is talking with Mario Kassar to come aboard "Mistress of the Seas" and newlyweds Geena Davis and Renny Harlin could make this a honeymoon voyage after all. Meanwhile, John McTiernan is readying to set sail with "Captain Blood" with Alec Baldwin and to follow with "Treasure Island." Robert Halmi also treasures making an island scene, having told me he found an ideal location for "Robinson Crusoe"... Brian Grazer, up and about (and how) after knee surgery, winged to N.Y. for the finale of "The Paper" and the big city locations of "Cowboy Way." He'll also check the N.Y. sites for "The Gelfan," a comedy about -- luck. Partner Ron Howard's next outing after "The Paper" still looms as John Grisham's ($ 3.7 million) script set on death row. A spring start's hoped for ... Frank Sinatra's "Duets" (Capitol) is pressing now with "listening" parties skedded for L.A., N.Y. and Miami in the next couple of weeks. While the teamings with Sinatra have been recorded and well-publicized, one contract is not yet signed -- Barbra Streisand's ... Some songs recorded by Frank were not paired for the album -- they're being readied for a possible second platter. Meanwhile, he's busy playing dates all over the place ... And talking about Streisand, she's fielding all kinds of inquiries for -- a possible pay-per-view concert, and is discussing a creative team, etc. ... Craig Sheffer, onscreen in "The Program," is now shooting "Sleep With Me" with Meg Tilly and Eric Stoltz ... Dean Hargrove and Fred Silverman set Anson Williams to direct a seg of their Dick Van Dyke CBSeries, "Diagnosis Murder." Dom DeLuise, Dick Martin and Joyce and Dick Van Patten guest.

GOOD TASTE RUNNETH OVER: "The Age of Innocence" in trade paperback hits the No. 1 spot on the New York Times Oct. 3 bestseller list, 72 years after it won a Pulitzer for author Edith Wharton. The reason for the book's revival, of course, Martin Scorsese's brilliant movie version starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder ... Herb Alpert and Shelley Duvall have joined Paul Newman as co-chairs of the Oct. 4 "Children Under Siege" concert for Bosnia at the Greek Theater. In addition to the already announced star musical performers, Britain's Alan Parsons makes his first U.S. concert appearance ... After their Metropolitan Opera 25th anni performance Monday night, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti were hosted by producer Tibor Rudas, who presents them and Jose Carreras at the July 16 pre-World Cup concert at Dodger Stadium. The trio of tenors will now sing two medleys instead of a single heard at their Rome concert three years ago ...
