Myers to stick around Canada during Oscars

GOOD MORNING: It'll be Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz teamed as Oscar presenters this year -- and not the "Wayne's World I & II"-"SNL" duo of Carvey and Mike Myers. Is Mike miffed? Nope, Myers says he'll be doing his favorite thing -- playing hockey in Calgary as the honorary captain of the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team -- taking penalty shots between periods at the former U.S.S.R.'s champ goalie, Vladislav Tretinack. "It's a dream come true," sez Myers, who sponsors three hockey teams for underprivileged kids in Canada. He and Carvey will reteam on "W.W.II" in June after the "SNL" season. Meanwhile, award presenter Lovitz is as excited as a movie fan about being on the Oscars -- and appearing with pal Carvey, with whom he's been plotting a movie being written by "SNL's" Andy Breckman. Lovitz's movie career has taken off since "A League of Their Own," which he followed with "National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1," and next in Rob Reiner's "North" with Bruce Willis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Elijah Wood. He nixed a TV series to pursue his movie career -- but he will play the voiceover of "The Critic" in ABC's animated series by Al Jean and Mike Reiss. He plays a movie critic who pulls no punches. It's very funny, he promises ... I received a letter from the WEMCO company, which promised Oscar ducats in their Robinson's/May promotion of American Movie Classics-designed ties. I printed the Acad's ire and WEMCO admits, "We did miff the Academy -- but we ran a successful promotion anyway. Unfortunately we couldn't send people to the Academy Awards so we are sending them -- to Europe instead." And you didn't enter their contest! ... The role of "Sharon Stone" in Amblin's "The Flintstones" will be played by -- Halle Berry of "Queen" fame ... And for the role of Max Von Mayerling, originally played by Erich Von Stroheim in movie's "Sunset Boulevard," Andrew Lloyd Webber's queried Telly Savalas.

HEADING FOR HIS MOVIE BOW in Billy Friedkin's "Blue Chips" is the Orlando Magics' young star, Shaquille O'Neal. Nick Nolte plays the movie's basketball coach and he'll be coached by all-time greats Red Auerbach and Pete Newell, sez Friedkin, who builds a basketball stadium in a Burbank hangar for the Par pic. Shaquille has been flying Holly Robinson to courtside at his games ... Montel Williams is guestarring in "Who Killed the Talk Show Host?," a Perry Mason drama now filming in Denver. He was the only missing member of the Katz/Rush Entertainment group at their second anni party at Cicada. Close to 200 reps from networks, cablers, distribs, producers were on hand to well-wish the projects including those of Woody Fraser, Susan Powter, Steve Allen, etc. Among those there: Michele Lee and Fred Rappoport, Gary Collins, Anthony Geary (who signed a two-year "General Hospital" deal), Esther and Richard Shapiro, Jayne and Audrey Meadows, Leeza Gibbons, Pierre Cossette, Barbara Corday, Pam and Jack Wishard, etc. ... Lunching yesterday at Cicada, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Rick Nicita, Michael Ovitz and Sydney Pollack ... Perennial bachelor David Niven Jr. will wed thesp Barbara Alexander June 19. ... Screenwriter Gary Ross's political satire days didn't end with "Dave"-- he's penned four songs for tomorrow's Gridiron dinner in D.C. including a scathing dismemberment of Rush Limbaugh to be delivered by the Cleveland Plain Dealer's D.C. bureau chief, Tom Brazaitas ... President Clinton will be on hand for the Gridiron roast ... His brother, Roger C., signed with APA for worldwide representation in music and acting. It was a big week for Roger Vorce and APA, whose client Sir Ian McKellen received the GLAAD award, and client writer/director Stuart Gillard's "Ninja Turtles III" was box office champ.

TED DANSON CREDITED wife Casey Coates-Danson for her inspiration to start the American Oceans Campaign. Casey, in turn, said it was Ted's desire to give something back (from his successes) to benefit children and children's children. The gala Wednesday at the BevHilton raised $ 300,000. Jay Leno emcee'd, Patti LaBelle gave a full show and Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito hosted. The "Cheers" cast was on hand as well as NBC/Par alumnus Brandon Tartikoff and Warren Littlefield ... Buck Henry again hosts the IFP/West Independent Spirit Awards tomorrow -- with one stipulation --"That it's not broadcast -- it allows me to say what I want." Henry just wound a role in Gus Van Sant's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues." And he's writing a movie for him called "A Script for Gus Van Sant." Buck completed a role in "Grumpy Old Men" and also wound a role in Robert Altman's "L.A. Short Cuts" and advises --"See it before it's cut!"... Neil Jordan delivers the keynote IFP speech ... Vanessa Brown, the "Quiz Kid" of TV fame who went on to become a movie star, will celebrate her 65th birthday Sunday ... Mo Rothman birthday'd wife Lyn at Michael's with friends on hand including: Anne and Kirk Douglas, Sherry Lansing and Billy Friedkin, Dolores Robinson, Dan Melnick, Caroline Graham, Susan and Andrew Wald.
