D'Works circles 'Girl'

'Sassy' based on true stories posted on Internet

DreamWorks is negotiating for remake rights on hit Korean comedy "Yeopgijeogin guenyeo" ("Sassy Girl"), with Maverick Films attached to produce.

"Sassy" follows a young man as he is shamed into coming to the aid of a girl he has just met. Once he helps her, he develops a deep sense of responsibility for her that enables him to tolerate her abusive behavior.

Written and directed by Jae-yong Kwak, "Sassy" was based on a series of true stories posted by Ho-sik Kim on the Internet describing his relationship with his girlfriend. He later transformed these into a bestselling book, from which Kwak adapted the screenplay.

Roy Lee brought the romantic comedy to Hollywood's attention, and he will exec produce along with partner Doug Davison. Maverick's Jay Polstein, Guy Oseary and Mark Morgan are producing.

Produced by Shin Cine, pic was released last July in South Korea and held the No. 1 B.O. spot for six weeks. It was released this month in Hong Kong.
