L.A.'s first female DJ, 'Peyton Place' thesp

Evelyn Scott, L.A.'s first female disc jockey and who later played a tough-talking tavern keeper on soap "Peyton Place," died of undisclosed causes Jan. 31 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She was 86.

Brockton, Mass., native landed her first DJ job at radio station KMPC and later was hired as a singing DJ on KHJ's "Rise and Shine" show.

She began acting in local theater companies, including the Stage Society, West Coast Theater and Pasadena Playhouse, and nabbed roles in films such as "Wicked Woman," "The Green-Eyed Blonde" and "I Want to Live." She played saloon keeper Ada Jacks in the soap "Peyton Place" 1965-69 and reprised the role on "Return to Peyton Place" 1972-1974 as well as the 1985 television movie "Peyton Place: The Next Generation."

Other TV shows she appeared in included "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke" and "Perry Mason."

After she retired from acting, she donated her time to helping the homeless and serving as a board member of Portals House Inc., a center for mentally ill people.

She is survived by husband Urban S. Hirsch and three stepchildren.

A memorial service is planned Saturday Feb. 23.
