TBS goes long for U. Games

Cabler picks up PAC 10, Big 12

NEW YORK -- TBS has signed a deal with Fox Sports Net to carry 11 Saturday night college football games from the Pacific 10 and Big 12 conferences for the next five years, starting this fall.

"These are two strong conferences," said Dennis Quinn, exec VP and general manager of TBS. "The games will help us get better ratings on the West Coast," where TBS suffers because it transmits only a single feed: A blockbuster theatrical at 8 p.m. in New York will run at 5 p.m. in Los Angeles, diminishing its Nielsen potential in Pacific time.

The way the football deal works, Quinn said, is that ABC will get the first pick of a given week's Pac 10/Big 12 games, and TBS will alternate the second pick with FSN on Saturday night. Before TBS came onboard, FSN sold that alternate weekly pick to TV stations in individual markets as part of a syndication package. Quinn said TBS has in effect bought out the syndication window.

TBS scheduled college football from 1982-91 in packages that included games of the Big 10, the Pac 10, the ACC and the SEC.
