HBO is cable operators' fave in Asia

Cabler bests competish for second year

CALCUTTA -- U.S. pay TV channel HBO has come out tops in a 2001 survey of cable operators in Asia for the second year running.

HBO had the best programming, viewer feedback, sales and marketing and was the most popular channel overall, according to cable operators in India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong who took part in a survey by Television Asia magazine.

They also voted it second for on-air look and third as far as value for money.

The channel got more votes than the previous year when it also zipped past rivals Star Movies, Zee MGM and Sony's AXN.

"We are very pleased and honored to once again be recognized No. 1 by the industry," says Dan Murrell, president and CEO of HBO Asia. "As the premium movie channel in the region, we will continue to work towards creating and delivering even more value to all our viewers and partners."

HBO premieres the top blockbuster movies on television in South Asia through exclusive licensing deals with four major Hollywood studios -- Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment/Columbia TriStar, Universal and Warner Bros (including New Line Cinema).
