Berlinale opens fest to film orgs' events

Fest offers new event dubbed 'Accept Diversity'

BERLIN -- The Berlin Intl. Film Festival is offering cinema-related groups the chance to stage their own events at the fest for the first time in a move dubbed "Accept Diversity."

The Peace Screen Award is taking advantage of the offer to screen Italian documentary "Un altro monde e possibile" (Another World Is Possible), which was not selected for any of the Berlinale's sections due to technical reasons.

Pic, about riots at the July 2001 G-8 summit in Genoa, was made by Italian filmmakers including Citto Maselli, Mario Monicelli, Gillo Pontecorvo, Ettore Scola, Ricky Tognazzi, Francesca Comencini, Pasquale Scimeca, Daniele Segre and Paolo and Vittorio Taviani.

It will be screened Feb. 9 at the Cinemaxx on Potsdamer Platz.

Backed by the Berlin-based Heinrich Boell Foundation and Intl. Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the Peace Screen Award is presented annually at the end of the Berlinale to a film officially screened at the fest that "fosters world peace." Kudos, which will be presented Feb. 17, includes a cash prize of 5,000 euros ($4,425).

The Berlin Film Fest runs Feb. 6-17.
