Inside Move: Still wanting

Pic unfulfilled amid distrib tribulations

As producers and buyers wrap up their dickering over the films of the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker and fest vet Julie Davis is still scratching her head and wondering: Just when is a distribution deal really done?

Davis got her first case of distrib vertigo with her debut "I Love You, Don't Touch Me!" Samuel Goldwyn Films picked up the film after it bowed at the 1997 Sundance fest but went belly up soon after. Pic was ultimately released by MGM. Things went more smoothly with her second film, "All Over the Guy," which was handled by Lions Gate Films last year, but Davis has been considerably less fortunate with "Amy's Orgasm," the story of a self-help author and celibacy advocate who grudgingly falls for a shock-jock DJ.

After the pic won the audience award at the 2001 Santa Barbara Film Festival, Davis made a deal with microindie Independent Artists for domestic distribution -- only to discover the company was going under.

Still, Davis rebounded and made a deal with Trey Wilkins and Jeanette Volturno's Catchlight Films for finishing funds to fine-tune elements such as sound and transfers and attracted the attention of another distrib, Andy Gruenberg's nascent Blue Steel Releasing. Plans were made for a spring 2002 release, only to be scrapped when that shingle, too, suffered an early death.

Davis and her attorneys Craig Emmanuel and Irwin Rappaport are now seeking distribution for "Amy's" once more.

Caveat emptor? For indies, it's caveat exigor -- let the seller beware.
