U Pix lifts Horowitz to co-prod chieftain

Exec to o'see all co-prod'n, distrib'n biz transactions

James M. Horowitz has been boosted to exec veepee of business and legal affairs for Universal Pictures.

Among his new responsibilities, Horowitz will be the primary business liaison at the studio for Working Title Films and will oversee all biz transactions involving co-productions and distribution deals.

These include deals with Miramax Films, which has partnered with U on such films as "Shakespeare in Love," "Bridget Jones's Diary" and the upcoming "Cinderella Man." He will also oversee U's business with DreamWorks Pictures, which includes such co-productions as "Gladiator," "A Beautiful Mind" and "Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat."

Horowitz will still be responsible for day-to-day operations of the business and legal affairs departments and continue to handle and oversee all matters relating to U's term deals. He will continue to report to Rick Finkelstein, president and chief operating officer of Universal Pictures.

Horowitz, who joined U's feature legal department in 1992, has served as senior VP of business and legal affairs since October 1999.

Finkelstein said, "Jimmy is one of the most highly respected and well-liked executives in the industry, and Universal has benefited immensely from his excellent relationships throughout the entertainment community as well as his leadership within the company."

Universal Pictures chair Stacey Snider said, "In so many ways, Jimmy has proven himself to be an invaluable member of our team, and I'm very pleased to be able to acknowledge the vital role he's played in our overall success as a company."

Prior to joining U, Horowitz served as counsel for the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, after practicing law for three years at Greenberg, Glusker, Fields, Claman & Machtinger.
