Miramax buys 'Samsara' for U.S.

Himalayan romance to screen at Sundance

LONDON -- Miramax Films has picked up U.S rights to Pan Nalin's "Samsara," a spiritual romance set against the spectacular backdrop of the Himalayas.

Pic is a drama about a young Tibetan monk torn between his yearning for the monastic life and the wife and child he loves.

It premiered at the Toronto fest last September, and is also included in the upcoming Sundance line-up.

Nalin is described as a self-taught filmmaker from a remote Indian village, who broke into commercials and corporate videos in Bombay.

He has made short films and documentaries for Canal Plus, the BBC and National Geographic, among others. He wrote the script of "Samsara" in 1994, but it took him seven years to get it made.

Odeon Films has acquired Canadian rights, and the film has also been sold to distribs in several other territories, including Ocean in France, Fandango in Italy and Intercontinental in Hong Kong.

Pic was produced by Germany's Pandora Filmproduktion and sold worldwide by Orfeo Films Intl.

Orfeo has also announced sales of Mira Nair's Venice fest winner "Monsoon Wedding" to Media Suits in Japan and Sinomovie in Taiwan.
