Holiday cheer spills over to Off B'way
Theaters report healthy numbers
Gotham's smaller theaters reported healthy numbers for the frame, with jumps between 40% and 70% reported for "Tick, Tick … Boom," "Puppetry of the Penis," "The Shape of Things," "Summer of '42" and "Love, Janis."
"The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)" set a house record of $122,000 at the Century Center. And producer Richard Frankel said "Stomp" enjoyed its best week ever.
Producer Robyn Goodman reported that "Tick, Tick … Boom" experienced a 70% bounce Christmas week from the previous session. Biz continued strong into the following week. On Jan. 1, "We had sold only 55 tickets (of the 275 seats) for that evening's performance," she said of the tuner's 275-seat venue, the Jane Street Theater. "By end of the day we had sold out."
Figures for Off Broadway's longer-running shows compared favorably to last year's Christmas-week numbers. "I Love You, You're Perfect" reported a 15% increase, attributed to higher ticket prices. "Forbidden Broadway" jumped 10%, thanks to its new, slightly larger venue.
"The Vagina Monologues" rose 5% per performance, having done a nine-perf sked in 2000 compared to eight in 2001. "Naked Boys Singing" fell only 1% from its 2000 numbers, while "De La Guarda" dropped 10%.
