BBC tunes up Cardiff fest

Global Search for New Musicals to be Oct. 20-Nov. 3

NEW YORK -- Write a stage musical and see it on TV.

The BBC has announced the first Intl. Festival of Musical Theater, to be held Oct. 20-Nov. 3 in Cardiff, Wales. Titled the Global Search for New Musicals, the 17-day fest is sponsored by the BBC as well as the city and county of Cardiff.

The British network will extend coverage of the biennial event beyond the U.K. to its worldwide partners in global radio and TV broadcast.

Global Search will present showcases of new musicals, each limited to 45-minutes versions to be staged twice during the three-week program.

Joanne Benjamin is the fest's chief executive, Julian Woolford its artistic director.

Deadline for submissions is Jan. 14, with showcase selections to be announced in June. Information is available at www.cardiffmusicals.com or through the Intl. Festival of Musical Theater in Cardiff.
