A withering portrait of Austria's middle-classes, "Dog Days" took best film and a special jury prize for actress Maria Hofstatter. Romantic mellodrama "Baran" scooped best director and screenplay.
Other buzz pics at the fest included Brit pic "Late Night Shopping," which won Gijon's young jury award, Thai Cannes sensation "Tears of the Black Tiger," and U.S. reality show lampoon "Series 7."
After seven years under director Jose Luis Cienfuegos, Gijon is now firmly established as Spain's premier launching pad for edgy, leftfield pics and the most popular film meet among young film critics and the country's youth press.
Fest highlight was a tribute to Japan's Seijun Suzuki, the director of '60s yakuza classics such as "Tokyo Drifter" and "Branded to Kill." Suzuki attended the fest.
