Mouse beams up 'Aliens'

'Monsters' scribes Gerson, Baird to adapt franchise

Disney will be dining on aliens for years to come: The Mouse House has scooped up film rights to "Aliens for Breakfast," "Aliens for Lunch" and "Aliens for Dinner," a trilogy of young-adult books penned by Jonathan Etra and Stephanie Spinner. Pics will be produced by Disney-based Jordan Kerner.

Disney has simultaneously enlisted "Monsters, Inc." scribes Daniel Gerson and Robert Baird to adapt the franchise into live-action pics. First up is "Aliens for Breakfast."

The books follow an alien and a 12-year-old boy who team up to save the world from an evil invader, who turns out to be the most popular kid in the boy's school.

Kerner Entertainment senior veep Paul Neesan will serve as exec producer of the pics. Disney veep of production Jeff Clifford and director of development Jill Morris will oversee the franchise for the studio, while Cielo Cerezo will co-produce.

Book pact was brokered by Jody Hotchkiss. Gerson, Baird and Kerner Entertainment are repped by CAA. Baird also is repped by the Alpern Group.

Kerner Entertainment recently wrapped Disney's "Snow Dogs," which stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Coburn. Shingle also recently completed a miniseries based on the classic Madeleine L'Engle children's book "A Wrinkle in Time" for Miramax and ABC.

Gerson, who co-wrote "Monsters," and Baird, who was a contributing writer to the pic, are penning a rewrite of "Herbie the Love Bug" for producer Robert Simonds and Disney.
