Fest fetes short films

106 films from 23 countries screened at four-day fest

The 5th Shorts Intl. Film Festival came to a close Thursday night with an awards ceremony at Gotham's Loews Lincoln Square theater.

The winning films were selected from seven categories. They are: Billy Greene's "Thought Bubble" (animation), Kenya Marquez' "La Mesa Servida," (comedy), Remy Weber's "Why Pay Two Rents" (documentary), Slawomir Fabicki's "Meska Sprawa" (drama), Virgil Widrich's "Copy Shop" (experimental), Lancelot Von Naso's "Fensterturz" (student) and Melissa Regan's "No Dumb Questions" (digital).

Each winning filmmaker received $2,000 in cash and a Tourneau watch. After-party took place at SoHo nightspot Veruka.

"We were thrilled with the films in this year's competition," said festival director Lisa Walborsky. "Attendance was good, especially considering the current situation in New York City. And, through the efforts of our staff, sponsors and volunteers, we were able to bring quality films from talented filmmakers to a New York audience."

A total of 106 films from 23 countries screened at the four-day fest, which is accredited by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Winners, excluding documentary and digital categories, are eligible for Oscar consideration.
