Mouse 'Faithful' to Smiths' ghost story

Disney signs for another spirit pic

Disney has paid low- against mid-six figures to buy the pitch "The Faithful" from twin brothers Alex and Andrew Smith.

Pic, a ghost story set during the Civil War that has a love story at its core, is somewhat similar to "The Others" and "The Sixth Sense."

No producer is yet attached to the project, which the writing duo is penning for Disney's Touchstone .

"Faithful" follows a sharecropper who assumes the identity of his boss, a plantation owner, to serve in his place during the Civil War in return for his own plot of land. Anxious to provide for his wife and unborn child after the war, the worker goes off to battle against his wife's wishes. He returns to the plantation a changed man, and strange events soon begin to affect his family and home.

Disney production VPs Jeff Clifford and Brigham Taylor brought the project into the studio.

Trio in pipeline

The Smiths, repped by Writers & Artists Agency, previously penned and directed "The Slaughter Rule" for producers Greg and Gavin O'Connor and Michael Robinson, with Ryan Gosling and David Morse starring. Pic is set for 2002 release.

Duo also wrote "The Garden" for producers Cathy Konrad and Ed Solomon at Columbia Pictures and "Radioactive Boy Scout" for "ER" star Anthony Edwards' production shingle.
