Deal, which is close to being completed, hinges on the ability to re-arrange Cannon's current cable schedule to make room for the Fox feature. Pic also stars Orlando Jones.
Cannon, who started in the biz as a stand-up comedian, will play Devon, a street drummer from Harlem who enrolls in a Southern university on scholarship. He initially struggles to acclimate to his new environment but later helps the school's marching band win a competition over its rival.
The Charles Stone III-helmed pic starts lensing Dec. 3 in Atlanta. With a script by Tina Chism, "Drumline" is being produced by Wendy Finerman and co-produced by Dallas Austin. Jody Gerson serves as exec producer.
Fox 2000 exec veepee of production Carla Hacken is overseeing the pic for Elizabeth Gabler's division.
Cannon, who currently hosts Nickelodeon's "Snick House" and music-based 'TEENick" programming block, is also the creator, exec producer and star of the cabler's upcoming "The Nick Cannon Show," skedded for a January 2002 bow.
Repped by Metropolitan and managed by Tollin/Robbins, Cannon's debut hip-hop CD from Nickelodeon's Nick Records and Jive Records hits shelves this spring.
