Perfecting 'Stranger'

Kaufman to develop, helm for Revolution Studios

This article was corrected on March 20, 2002.

NEW YORK -- "Quills" helmer Philip Kaufman is attached to develop and direct "Perfect Stranger" for Revolution Studios.

Pic is earmarked for Julia Roberts to topline; her Gotham-based Shoelace Prods. partner Deb Schindler and Revolution's Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas are overseeing the project. If the film goes forward, Kaufman's son Peter Kaufman will produce. Goldsmith-Thomas brought the project to Kaufman's attention.

John Bokenkamp ("Taking Lives") penned the original script, which centers on a female investigative journalist who goes undercover on the Internet to solve the mystery of a friend's murder. Revolution is in talks with scribe Frank Renzulli to rewrite the Bokencamp script.

"I would love to work with Julia Roberts," director Kaufman told Daily Variety. "The main character pushes an envelope in cyberspace that is dangerous to push. That's intriguing to me."

Kaufman is repped by ICM.
