Hong Kong's Applause Pictures, headed by helmer and producer Peter Chan ("Comrades, Almost a Love Story" and the DreamWorks-produced "Love Letter"), Korea's BOM Film Prods., backed by Korean giant CJ Entertainment, and Thailand's Cinemasia will produce three 35-minute ghost stories by Chan, Kim Jee-Won ("The Foul King") and Nonzee Nimibutr ("Nang Nak").
Each film will tell its own story but will be compiled to form one feature-length picture. The production companies will recoup through their respective territories and will share international receipts equally.
"If we do not expand our market and cross borders we won't be able to keep up with the rising costs of productions in our respective countries," Chan said.
The film should be ready for next year's Pusan fest and will be internationally marketed by Fortissimo Films. Wouter Badenrecht, Fortissimo's CEO, said: "The directors are well established and commercially successful in their territories and have had international success. That's why this project will be welcomed by international markets."
Pusan fest opened Friday and closes Saturday.
