'Graduate' picks up road dates pre-B'way bow

Previews of all-star legiter begin Feb. 15 in Gotham

Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs and Alicia Silverstone take "The Graduate" on the road prior to its Broadway run, now confirmed to open at a Shubert theater on April 4.

Terry Johnson's stage adaptation of the 1968 coming-of-age film classic plays Baltimore's Morris A. Mechanic Theater (Jan. 10-20), Toronto's Canon Theater (Jan. 23-Feb. 17) and Boston's Colonial Theater (Feb. 20-March 3). Previews begin on Feb. 15 in New York.

Turner originated the stage role of Mrs. Robinson on the West End in March 2000. Playing the young lovers, Biggs and Silverstone make their respective Broadway debuts with the production, to be directed by Johnson.

The Plymouth Theater has been mentioned but not confirmed as the Shubert theater where "The Graduate" will eventually land. The 1,079-seater is home to the musical "Thou Shalt Not," which is playing a limited engagement.

Elsewhere on the rialto

On Nov. 18 and 19, City Center Encores presents "Broadway Bash" with Kristin Chenoweth, Donna Murphy and Vanessa Williams singing songs from forgotten musicals.

In the musical chairs department: Edward Albee's new one, "The Goat," had been announced to open Feb. 28 at the Belasco Theater. Sources close to the production say the play, Albee's first to open on Broadway in nearly 20 years, is currently destined for the Golden Theater.

Nathan Lane's "indefinite" sick leave from "The Producers" was extremely short-lived. After missing seven perfs last week, the actor returned for the Sunday matinee, as well as a special performance that night to benefit the Actors Fund. A rep for the show said Lane was expected to perform tonight. Reports of his doing seven instead of eight perfs a week, and skipping the Wednesday matinee, was not confirmed.
