Col links up 'Spy' offices

Cyberbiz Brief

Media.net has inked a deal with Columbia Pictures to link up the production offices of the studio's "I Spy" comedy actioner in Vancouver and Los Angeles using Media.net's high speed network.

Manhattan Beach, Caif.-based Media.net's Avid File Transfer delivers pre-digitized Avid dailies over its private network and streamline the production process by eliminating costly delays associated with delivering tapes by air from post house Toy Box West in Vancouver to pic's editor Peter Teschner working out of Sony's editing rooms in Los Angeles.

"I Spy," starring Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson and directed by Betty Thomas, began shooting in Hungary in September and is currently shooting in Vancouver. Teschner receives each day's video files already prepped for editing a full day sooner than if they had been sent by air. Media.net's high-speed connection makes it possible to download the dailies in a fraction of the actual running time. Hours of dailies take only minutes to download.

"Media.net speeds up the post production cycle by shifting the digitizing process to the post facility," Teschner said. "Not only are we avoiding waiting for tape delivery, Media.net saves us hours of digitizing here in the editing room. And, we are bypassing the incredible hassles I've encountered with customs hold-ups on every other international project I've worked on."

So far Media.net has primarily focused on servicing the TV biz, landing the productions of "Gilmore Girls," "The Education of Max Bickford," "Smallville," "Family Law" and "Maybe It's Me" as clients of its network.
