SYDNEY -- Security concerns have claimed another high-profile showbiz industry casualty, with the organizers of CineAsia 2001 confirming Monday that the trade show scheduled for Dec. 4-6 in Bangkok is off until next year.

"It was a difficult decision to make, considering that it is the first show that Sunshine Group Worldwide has ever had to postpone in our 17 years of running conventions," Robert Sunshine, the event's co-organizer, told Daily Variety.

"However, in light of the world situation following the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, we felt that we had to do what was in the best interests of our attendees, trade show exhibitors and sponsors," Sunshine said. "We did not think we could adequately produce a show when security concerns were at such a high level."

Was to be a first in Bangkok

CineAsia is a convention and trade show for exhibs, distribs and manufacturers of cinema equipment and concessions. This year's event was to be the first edition staged in Bangkok after the confab switched from its previous bases in Hong Kong and Singapore. Show has been running for seven years.

Sunshine informed reps of the U.S. majors of the postponement Monday, and he said all were very supportive. He hopes to set a new date -- probably in the second half of 2002, avoiding the ShoWest and Cinema Expo confabs -- after discussions with sponsors including Coca-Cola within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the New York-based Sunshine Group team leaves this Friday for Orlando, Fla., to prep the ShowEast convention, which kicks off Oct. 31.
