The annual get-together for the British and French film industries in the French seaside resort featured a competition lineup of six titles including buzz pic "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," from Stewart Sugg; "Me Without You," from Sandra Goldbacher; and Saul Metzstein's "Late Night Shopping."
Headed by Brit thesp Emily Watson, the actor-dominated jury awarded the cinematographer prize to John Carney's "On the Edge," about a young joyrider who opts for a psychiatric hospital over prison. Film also picked up the audience award. Comedy drama "The Lawless Heart," helmed and written by Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger, received a special mention.
Hugh Grant was on hand Saturday for a gala screening of his box office hit "Bridget Jones's Diary" as well as the annual French-U.K. golf tournament that has become a staple part of the fest. Other stars in attendance included "Dogville" thesp Stellan Skarsgard and Martine McCutcheon, who took a week out of the London production of "My Fair Lady" to attend the fest. McCutcheon is featured in "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang."
Attracting top industry players from both sides of the Channel, the producers round table chaired by the U.K.'s Film Council and French org the CNC attracted more than 60 players Friday as well as CNC top dogs David Kessler and Marc Nicholas.
Fest launched the Short Channel, a competition to encourage French/Brit cooperation backed by 300,000 euros ($276,000) in funding. Three teams of French filmmakers and three British teams will make short pics based on the same three scripts. Results will be featured at the Dinard fest next year.
