'Cardiff' lands cast for Herman

Herman adaptation of Webb novel draws ensemble

NEW YORK -- Heather Graham, Colin Firth and Mary Steenburgen are poised to star in "New Cardiff," and Helena Bonham Carter is in early talks to round out the quartet for the romantic comedy to be directed by Mark Herman ("Little Voice").

The film, scripted by Herman from a novel by Charles Webb ("The Graduate"), is being financed by Buena Vista Intl. Distribution isn't set, but the expectation is that it will be distributed by Disney in a negative pickup. Barnaby Thompson of Fragile Films is producing.

Set in New England, the film is a fish-out-of-water story, revolving around a British artist (Firth) who is healing after being dumped by his fiancee, a role being offered to Bonham Carter. The spurned man holes up in New Cardiff, Vt., staying at a motel run by Steenburgen. She sympathizes with his plight and introduces him to a local girl (Graham). Sparks commence and romance looks likely until his scheming fiancee comes looking for him.

The AMG-repped Graham is coming off the Allen and Albert Hughes-directed "From Hell" and Chen Kaige's "Killing Me Softly," while the Gersh-repped Steenburgen will next be seen in the Irwin Winkler-directed "Life as a House." Firth's repped by ICM in London.
