Walter Avancini

Walter Avancini, a Brazilian television director who became famous for introducing street language in his soap operas, died Wednesday Sept. 27 in Rio de Janeiro He was 66 and had been suffering from cancer.

He is credited with revolutionizing Brazil's telenovelas by introduced popular language to television in the late 1960s.

In 1975, he turned Jorge Amado's "Gabriela'' into a sensual telenovela starring actress Sonia Braga. He also directed the TV miniseries "A Padroeira,'' a colonial-time drama currently running on Brazilian television.
