Teuton TV rips scribe pay rule

Change would demand extra pay retroactively

By ED MEZA

BERLIN -- German commercial broadcasters are protesting a proposed copyright law they fear could sharply cut local TV productions.

The changes would give freelance journalists, translators and writers the right to demand extra pay retroactively up to 10 years after signing a contract if they believe they failed to get fair and proper compensation.

Worried reps of TV giants RTL and ProSiebenSat 1 met officials of Germany's Federal Ministry of Justice last week.

Broadcasters fear the new regulations would lead to a flood of lawsuits and cause budgetary uncertainty. Newspaper and book publishers as well as ad agencies rallied against the proposal last week. The new bill goes before the Parliament in October.
