Tribeca, Burrough do time for HBO's 'Crime'
De Niro, partner to produce 'Crime Wave'
Frequent Vanity Fair contributor Bryan Burrough, who conceived the project for HBO, will write the first episode.
Tribeca partners Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro will produce. Execs Naomi Despres and Hardy Justice will oversee project's development for Tribeca, with HBO senior veep Anne Thomopoulos shepherding for the cabler.
"Crime Wave" is described as an unromanticized portrait of mythologized American gangsters, including Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde and the Ma Barker gang. Series will also document the birth of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI.
Few freelance writers have as impressive a Hollywood track record as Burrough. Several studios have optioned articles by the CAA-repped writer. Tribeca is also developing "Miranda," based on a Burrough article about a woman who contacted Hollywood celebs by phone and developed obsessive relationships with them.
Among the projects in active development at Tribeca are "Analyze That," the sequel to "Analyze This," and "Meet the Fockers," the follow-up to the Jay Roach-helmed "Meet the Parents." Both pics will star De Niro.
