WARSAW -- Robert Glinski's "Hi, Tereska" won the Golden Lion at the 26th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia Sept. 15.

The film -- which also won the Special Jury Prize at Karlovy Vary -- is a about a troubled teenage girl from a working class family.

There were a total of 31 pics in competition.

Witold Leszczynski -- who came out tops in Cannes for "The Life of Matthew" in 1968 -- got the Special Prize nod for "Requiem." Michal Rosa took best director for "Silence," penned by Krzysztof Piesiewicz, previously Krzysztof Kieslowski's regular co-writer.

Best actor awards went to Ewa Kasprzyk ("Bellissima"), Kinga Preis ("Silence") and Krzysztof Pieczynski ("Heaven Comes Tomorrow"). Writer-director Yurek Bogayevicz took best screenplay for Haley Joel Osment-starrer "Edges of the Lord," a story about the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of children.

And Artur Urbanski won best first feature for "Bellissima," which was produced by Polish Television as part of its young directors series, "Generation 2000."

After last week's tragedy in the U.S., the organizers considered cutting the festival short. They decided to proceed, but cancelled all banquets and other social events.
