Though Miramax declined comment on the pact, people close to the studio say it's likely the pic will be released this fall for Oscar qualification.
Film, which snagged the Venice Film Festival's youth jury prize, reunited Cohn and Salles, who teamed on the Academy Award-nommed "Central Station."
"Behind the Sun" was penned by Salles, Sergio Machado and Karim Ainouz, based on the book "Broken April" by Albanian novelist Ismail Kadare. Story, set in the Brazilian badlands in 1910, concerns two families locked in a deadly generations-old feud.
Miramax's relationship with Salles began with "Exposure" and flourished with "Central Station." Studio continues to develop several high-profile projects intended for Salles to direct or produce.
The prolific Cohn's oeuvre includes producing "The Garden of the Finzi-Contini," "Black and White in Color" and "One Day in September."
