SPC snaps up '13' rights

Pic stars McConaughey, Turturro, Irving

TORONTO -- Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American distribution rights to "13 Conversations About One Thing" from director Jill Sprecher.

Pic, penned by Sprecher and sister Karen, stars Matthew McConaughey, John Turturro, Clea DuVall, Amy Irving and Alan Arkin. William Morris Agency Independent's Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson packaged the deal with Sony; the WMA division, which received the script several years ago, helped secure the film's financing when it fell through.

Ensemble pic centers on five characters who connect by happenstance. Pic, which screened over the weekend at the Toronto Film Fest, had generated interest from multiple distribs, including United Artists and Lions Gate, before SPC closed the deal late Monday.

Film was financed by Stonelock Pictures and Echo Lake, run by Doug Mankoff. Among the pic's producers are Beni Atoori and Gina Resnick. Michael Stipe was part of a team of exec producers.

Overseas Film Group controls international rights to the pic.
