COPENHAGEN -- The upcoming Norwegian Film Festival will screen 118 films from 17 countries and includes tributes to Stanley Kubrick and "local girl" Marilyn Monroe, whose father, Edvard Mortensen, was a baker from the fest's home town of Haugesund.

Unspooling Aug. 25-Sept. 1, the event will also present the Amandas, the local equivalent of the Oscars.

This year the fest is emphasizing its Scandinavian profile with an extended edition of New Nordic Films -- the market prelude to the showcase -- as well as the launch of a new Nordic film prize and Scandinavian premieres for opening and closing nights.

"The Nordic program is bigger and more important than ever," said festival director Gunnar Johan Lovvik.

The fest will open with the world premiere of Norwegian director Thomas Robsahm Tognazzi's "The Greatest Thing."

The 28 features in the main program include "Moulin Rouge," "Shrek," Nanni Moretti's Cannes winner "The Son's Room" and Jan Troell's "As White as in Snow." The fest will close with the launch of Swedish director Daniel Alfredson's "Love Between Wars."

Kubrick will be celebrated by presentations of "2001: A Space Odyssey" and Jan Harlan's "SK: A Life in Pictures."
