Univision net set to launch in January

Univision Communications plans to announce today that it's settled on a name for its second Spanish-lingo network -- Telefutura.

It picked the name from among hundreds of entries by Univision employees.

Net, to launch in January, will be a 24-hour mix of news, sports, novelas, talk and variety shows. It aims to lure the millions of Spanish speakers who currently spend all or most of their viewing time watching English-language TV.

Dominates market

The Univision broadcast net currently dominates the Spanish-lingo market, followed by smaller rival Telemundo.

Telefutura was guaranteed distribution when Univision purchased a group of TV stations from Barry Diller's USA Networks earlier this year for $1.1 billion.

The stations, most of which had been airing USA's Home Shopping Network, will now move to Spanish-language.

Telefutura will immediately reach 80% of all U.S. Hispanic households through its station group and affiliates.
