German $ backs pair's pix

Fund to provide coin to five telepics

By ED MEZA

BERLIN -- German film financier MBP Medien is launching a 10 million euro ($8.7 million) fund to finance TV projects from Hollywood producers Fred Weintraub and Tom Kuhn.

The fund will provide backing for five TV movies -- including "A Man Called Rage," "Warrior Angels" and "Endangered Species" -- as well as two family dramas still in development. Each project is budgeted at $1.5 million-$2 million and will be financed wholly by MBP.

Munich-based MBP backed Weintraub and Kuhn's recent direct-to-video pic "Amazons and Gladiators," about a female warrior seeking revenge in Ancient Rome.

Pic turned out to be a hot property at this year's AFM and has gone on to become a top global seller for distributor Beyond Films. "So far it's made about 170% of its production costs," MBP topper Rainer Mockert told Daily Variety.

Like the sword and sandal pic, the new projects will be lensed in Europe, including locations in Lithuania and Ireland.
