Teutons saddle up for Western parody

Local 'Manitu' breaks B.O. records for Thursday opener

LONDON -- Teutonic Western parody "Der Schuh des Manitu" has taken the box office in Germany and Austria by storm.

In Germany, pic broke records for a Thursday opening for a local film with sales of 203,000 tickets. It upped that to 954,303 admissions and DM11.47 million ($5.09 million) in the first four days -- the best opening weekend for a local pic since 1995's "Werner, That's Hot!!!"

Few local films cross the million visitors benchmark throughout their entire run.

In Austria, pic beat out the previous record holder "Mission: Impossible 2" for the best opening weekend ever.

"Der Schuh des Manitu," starring and helmed by local comedian Michael "Bully" Herbig, concerns a Bavarian Apache chief, his trapper friend and his gay brother.

Pic's a co-production between Bernd Eichinger's Constantin Film, which also released the film in both territories, Seven Pictures-Produktion and Herbig's herbXfilm.
