Vet Vargas ankles Fox's KTTV team

No replacement named for veep, G.M. spot

Diana L. Vargas, VP and general manager of Fox station KTTV Los Angeles, resigned Friday to pursue other professional interests.

Vargas, a 12-year vet of the station, will exit June 30. No decision has been made regarding her replacement, the station said.

Vargas could not be reached for comment on her planned departure. She did, however, release a statement.

"We have a terrific team here at Fox 11, and leaving them has been the most difficult part of my decision along with not picking up the telephone while watching our newscasts to give immediate feedback," the statement said.

Emmy noms

News of Vargas' exit came in the same week that the station earned 20 local Emmy noms -- the most of any station in Los Angeles -- as well as a healthy May ratings sweep, including a Monday-Sunday win with its "Fox 11 News at 10."

Vargas has served as the station's veep and G.M. since January 1997. Prior to that, she rose through the ranks to become KTTV's veep/general sales manager in August 1994, after joining the station in August 1988 as an account exec.

She was the first Hispanic woman to head an English-language TV station in a major market.

With Vargas' departure, two G.M. posts are now open among Fox's 22 O&Os: Earlier this month, Laureen Ong left WTTG in Washington, D.C., to serve as prexy of the National Geographic Channel, a co-venture between Fox Cable Networks and National Geographic Society (Daily Variety, May 2).
