Barreto, a native of Brazil, will be based in Miami and will report directly to Willy Burkhardt, executive vice president, ESPN Enterprises and ESPN International.
He will oversee ESPN's entire operation in Latin America, including performance of its four feevees (ESPN Dos, ESPN Brasil, ESPN Sur, and ESPN International), as well as syndication, affiliate sales and business development within the region.
ESPN last year brought in pay TV programmer GloboSat as a partner in the ESPN Brasil network.
ESPN also teamed with Globosat and with Fox Sports International to create a new 24-hour Portuguese-lingo channel, ESPN Fox Sports. That as-yet unlaunched channel will replace ESPN International in Brazil.
Prior to joining ESPN, Barreto worked for Spain's Telefonica Media, most recently as managing director for Latin America
Barreto previously spent almost five years with Net Brasil, first as programming and marketing director (1995-1997) and later as CEO (1997-1999). His career includes a stint as general manager of HBO Brazil, and several years with the Abril Group, where his positions include director of operations for Abril subsid TVA, Brazil's number-two MSO.
