Inside Move: Cramer's back after ad flap

Phony quotes pair returns after reprimand

Director of creative advertising Matthew Cramer, who fabricated a film critic he dubbed David Manning, returned to work at Sony Pictures Entertainment on Monday.

Cramer, along with his boss, Col's senior exec VP of marketing Josh Goldstine, was formally reprimanded and suspended for 30 days without pay on June 7.

The studio has admitted that phony quotes had been used to promote the Columbia pics "Hollow Man," "Vertical Limit" and "A Knight's Tale," as well as Revolution Studio's "The Animal." But SPE says it has since put in place a new system of internal checks and balances to guarantee the accuracy of quotes in future ad campaigns.

The flap has reverberated at other movie studios, like Miramax/Dimension, where a recent campaign for "Scary Movie 2" contained comedic allusions to Sony's fakery in commercials featuring the Wayans Bros. -- and at Fox Searchlight, which has touted "honest to God real reviews" in ads for its current pic "Sexy Beast."

Cramer, reached at his office, called the episode "water under the bridge," and declined further comment. Goldstine did not return a call seeking comment.
