U.K.'s NTL, Telewest join to draw Net users

World Brief

NTL and Telewest, the U.K.'s cable operators, are joining forces to co-market their broadband Internet services.

The six-week, £4 million ($5.6 million) campaign, dubbed Building Broadband Britain, will begin at the end of July. It is aimed at speeding the acceptance of broadband in the U.K., a market with only 100,000 subscribers.

Both cablers are keeping their individual branding but have set a standard monthly subscription rate of $35, well below the $56 British Telecom charges for its DSL connections. Observers expect NTL and Telewest to merge in the future.
