Legit fest spotlights 10 new musicals

Event to be Sept. 23-24 at Gotham theaters

NEW YORK -- The National Alliance for Musical Theater will host its 2001 Festival of New Musicals Sept. 23 and 24 at the Douglas Fairbanks and John Houseman Theaters.

Fest marks the alliance's 13th year of musical presentations. The 10 new tuners include Mel Marvin and John Jakes' "Great Expectations," Melissa Manchester and Jeffrey Sweet's "I Sent a Letter to My Love," Paris Barclay's "Letters from 'Nam," David Simpatico and Will Todd's "The Screams of Kitty Genovese" and Welly Yang, Woody Pak and Brian Yorkey's "Making Tracks."

Other presentations include "Actor, Lawyer, Indian Chief" by Craig Carnelia and David Bell; "The Mystery of the Dancing Princesses" by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner; "Palm Beach" by Robert Cary, David Gursky and Benjamin Feldman; "UG" by Jim Georghan, Rick Rhodes and Vivian Rhodes; and "When the Rains Come" by David Feinstein, Edward Henderson and Ann Mortifee.

Past festival presentations include Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan's "Thoroughly Modern Millie," which will be staged on Broadway in the 2001-02 season, and Kirsten Childs' "The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin," staged last season at Playwrights Horizons.
