In the screenwriting categories, vet director-scribe Bertrand Tavernier landed the award for established Gallic author, and Roch Stephanik took the nod for new talent in French cinema.
Tavernier, who heads the Institut Lumiere Cinematheque, has written and directed over 25 films, including "Captain Conan" and " 'Round Midnight." He's working on the $35 million "Laissez-passer" (The Pass), which he's directing and co-producing from a script he co-wrote.
Rising helmer Stephanik recently wrote and directed his first feature, "Stand-By." Pic debuted last year, winning a special mention in the Montreal film fest in the best first fiction category, while in February the film's lead actress, Dominique Blanc, won a Cesar, the Gallic counterpart to the Oscar.
The SACD annually awards prizes for confirmed and new talent in a number of categories, including cinema, TV, theater, choreography, music and radio.
The society also confers the Suzanne Bianchetti award on a rising young actress. This year's honor, named for the French actress of the 1920s and '30s, was presented to Barbara Schulz, who stars in Gallic pic "Un Aller Simple."
