Sex warms up Chile viewers

Survey: 74% say yes to sex on TV after 10 p.m.

SANTIAGO -- Chileans like their television spicy, according to a new survey. Erotic movies shown by broadcaster Chilevision earn top ratings in the country.

An overwhelming 74% of those surveyed said that explicit sex ought to be allowed on TV after 10 p.m. and 62% want explicit sex on nightly telenovelas. Some 60% want no government censorship of TV fare.

Poll, commissioned by daily newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias and carried out by Lo Castillo Publicaciones, reinforces the trend toward more racy fare on terrestrial and cable TV.

Playboy TV, introduced last year by cable operator VTR, has become a huge draw, while Chilevision consistently scores high ratings for its adult movie series.

But Teodoro Ribera, a conservative member of the Consejo Nacional de TV, the government regulatory board, lashed out at the amount of erotic TV being shown.

"These movies are very cheap," he said. "They don't do anything towards improving the audience or society."
