Moroccan Nabyl Ayoucha's "Ali Zaoua" won the youth film category and Canada's "Bully Dance," by Janet Perlman, was tapped best animated film.
The 41st fest, which claims to be the oldest devoted to children's fare, continues to attract a wide international following, expanding business contacts for the Zlin Studio, 200 miles east of Prague.
Among the guests were Daniel Andrews, senior programming exec for Fox Kids Europe, which is buying rights to animation from the largely untapped Zlin catalog. Reps of the Beijing Golden Panda Cartoon Design Co. were also at the fest, buying rights to Zlin animated series and features.
Other attendees included Rock Demers, chief of Canadian producer La Fete, and U.S. director Peyton Reed, who presented his recent teen cheerleader hit "Bring It On."
Film studio, now known as Ateliery Bonton Zlin, is working on the first Czech-Chinese co-production, a live-action and animated feature based on its popular "Max and Sally" toon series. Company also now handles 55% of video duplication in the Czech Republic.
Studio, which Czech media company Bonton bought for $2 million four years ago, did just under $5 million in business in 2000, up from $3.5 million in 1999, and more than triple 1997's revenues.
