Bush reups Powell
Prez nominates 3 others for FCC posts
Bush's nod was widely expected, since Powell's first term as FCC topper technically would have ended after only one year.
Powell, son of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, was bumped up from FCC commissioner soon after Bush took office.
"If confirmed by the Senate, the extension of my term beyond next June's expiration date will provide a positive and helpful continuity to the important work that I, and the new FCC commissioners who will be taking office later this year, will be engaged in," Powell said.
"I am gratified by the confidence President Bush has indicated in my tenure as chairman of the Federal Communication Commission by the announcement that he intends to renominate me for a second commission term," he said.
Also last week, President Bush announced his intention to nominate three new commissioners -- Michael Copps, Kevin Martin and Kathleen Abernathy -- to replace Susan Ness, William Kennard and Harold Furchtgott-Roth.
