Everett goes 'South' for $7 million laffer

$7 mil pic to start shooting in July

ROME -- Rupert Everett is in advanced negotiations to star for Italian writer-director team Carlo and Enrico Vanzina as a British nobleman fallen on hard times in the English-language comedy "South Kensington."

Pic is a $7 million feature due to start shooting in London in July for Medusa Film.

Everett will play a member of the English aristocracy whose father has squandered away the family fortune. To make ends meet, he is forced to take in lodgers at his swanky residence in the neighborhood of the title.

The landlord character functions as the link between several interlocking stories of love and friendship involving young Italians and other Europeans living in London for work or study.

Exponents of the Italian commercial mainstream since the 1970s, writer Enrico Vanzina and his brother Carlo, who directs, will undertake a change of style with the new project after the duo's last two box office disappointments, both of which were light comedies with simple storylines and no major-name stars.

"South Kensington" represents a move into more sophisticated comedy, with a more complex plot and higher-profile cast. Medusa is negotiating with French, English and possibly German co-production partners, with other key cast members to be announced closer to shooting.
