Inside Move: Mediaset: Not for sale

Telecom Italia topper Colaninno offers to buy

MILAN -- Telecom Italia topper Roberto Colaninno said last week he would happily buy Silvio Berlusconi's TV group Mediaset if its owner would just sell.

His unexpected offer in the business daily Il Sole 24 Ore came in the middle of Italy's electoral campaign.

Berlusconi, the leading candidate to become prime minister in the May 13 election, is under pressure to sell off Mediaset to avoid conflicts of interest. But the media tycoon claims he has "no editorial influence over his networks," and that he would, if he wins, only consider putting his media assets in a blind trust -- not selling them.
