Pic, to begin lensing in early June, will star spoken-word artist Sarah Jones, while the Roots band member and actor Tariq Trotter ("Brooklyn Babylon") and musician Lil' Kim ("Juwanna Man") are in advanced talks to co-star. Lorraine Hayes and Lapacazo Bhagchandani will serve as producers, with Gordon Bijelonic as co-producer.
Set in the multicultural ZIP code of East Harlem, "10029" stems from an original idea by Barros. Project tells four interlocking stories, entitled "Milagros," "Confessions," "Nic" and "The End."
Jones' solo theater piece "Surface Transit" brought her to the attention of Daily Variety, which last year named her one of the paper's "top 10 comedic talents of 2000." She appears in PBS' award-winning "City Life" series and is featured in Spike Lee's pic "Bamboozled." She also has appeared in "The Vagina Monologues."
The final section of "10029" will be co-written by actor-playwright Roger Guenveur Smith ("Eve's Bayou"), who has won an Obie and three NAACP Awards for his theater work. In June, BET Movies will broadcast Smith's theater piece "A Huey P. Newton Story."
Barros has produced and directed nearly 100 musicvids for artists including Gloria Estefan, Enrique Iglesias, Carlos Ponce and Sarina Paris.
RKP is a musicvid and commercial production company that recently formed a film division. Exec producer Permann wrapped the action-thriller "Crime Partners," starring Tyrin Turner ("Menace II Society") and Clifton Powell ("Next Friday"), Snoop Dogg, Ice-T and rapper Ja Rule.
Permann also produced the comedy "Long Shot," currently in post-production, starring Paul Sorvino, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Kenny Rogers and Art Garfunkel.
