At Wednesday's UCLA Royce Hall preem of "Further Tales," Showtime's Jerry Offsay called the show "the honored grandparent" of the cutting-edge gay drama and said it would be shown in "QAF"'s Sunday at 10 p.m. time period. Producer Alan Poul called this slot "the penis hour."
"The audience, if you'll pardon the pun, is up for it," Poul said.
The audience at Royce Hall was up for the screening, though director Pierre Gang, wasn't pleased with the venue.
"This is TV, not film," the helmer said in a mild French accent. The big screen showing was "too bright, too sharp, the sound was off. Cutting for TV is different."
The screening had begun with comments from Maupin who at one point recalled a '70s trip to Palm Springs and being "in the sack with a guy who had been Rock Hudson's lover." The author paused and then said, "Most movie premieres don't start this way," which got a laugh.
Among those watching "Further Tales" were Showtime's Gary Levine and Pancho Mansfield; co-star Henry Czerny and Whip Hubley; producer Suzanne Girard; plus 700 guests including Greg Louganis, Thomas Gibson, Ron Cowen, Dan Lipman and Scott Lowell.
