This year's fest -- organized by Duke U.'s Center for Documentary Studies and co-chaired by Martin Scorsese and Robert Coles -- will feature a career award for Oscar-winning documentarian Barbara Kopple ("Wild Man Blues," "Harlan County, USA"); a tribute to Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami ("Lumiere et compagnie," "Taste of Cherry"); and an industry award for the Soros Documentary Fund, which supports docu filmmakers with $1.5 million annually.
DoubleTake will screen about 100 films this year, including 57 new works, 12 world premieres and 12 U.S. preems culled from more than 530 submissions. This year's slate also features the East Coast premieres of D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus' "Down From the Mountain" and Tracy Seretean's "Big Mama," which won the Oscar this year for best documentary short subject.
Among previous years' preems were Michael Apted's "Me and Isaac Newton," Mira Nair's "The Laughing Club of India," Josh Aronson's Oscar-nommed "Sound and Fury," Jeremy Spear's "Fastpitch" and Daniel Anker and Barak Goodman's Oscar-nommed "Scottsboro: An American Tragedy."
